    Desalination: what it is and what it is used for

    Desalination is the process of considerable deconcentration of salts from brackish or marine waters to make them drinkable or usable for industrial purposes. The primary and most widespread water desalination processes are: by reverse osmosis and by distillation.

    Reverse osmosis: what it is and how it works

    Reverse osmosis is a process carried out through membranes which, thanks to the used pressure, reverse the natural process of diffusion of salts and separate the inlet water into desalinated water (Permeate) and water in which all the salts are concentrated (Brine). Reverse osmosis allows us to achieve excellent results in desalination processes with savings on energy and the purchase of chemical products. To achieve an efficient and sustainable reverse osmosis process, it is fundamental to implement a pre-treatment designed based on the characteristics of the water that allows minimizing the accumulation of impurities and encrustations and guarantees continuity of the production cycle.

    Desalination by distillation

    The evaporation desalinator, on the other hand, uses the water distillation process in special evaporators of various types (MSF or MED)

    The great technological innovation introduced a few years ago by Celko Chemical in desalination processes has resulted in the products of the Celkerse “D” (for reverse osmosis) and Celkard “D” (for evaporators) series. These allow, at low doses, the total prevention of encrustations and the in-line cleaning of old residues of crystalline encrustations.

    The main advantages of the new category of products for the treatment of desalination factories are:

    • the products of the Celkerse D line are not affected by the presence of iron entering the osmosis (limit from membrane manufacturers = 0.03 ppm ì) and stabilize the iron in input up to concentrations of 0.40 ppm, preventing its deposition in the membrane.
    • very high efficacy in any pH range; in all plants, thanks to the antiscalants of the Celkerse D and Celkard D lines, it was possible to eliminate the use of sulfuric acid and periodic chemical washing, with consequent economic savings and increased productivity of the systems
    • the active ingredients are not Calcium-sensitive, and therefore not only are they not deactivated during the concentration phase, but they remain active at any concentration of the encrusting salts, so much so that they have even been successfully tested in the water/ash mixes of Carbon 50: 50,
    • the very low threshold limit, combined with the very high tolerance to calcium, makes the use of dosage management software unnecessary, and the continuous correction of the same as characteristics of the feed water vary,
    • the products of the Celkerse D and Celkard D lines are certified by NSF International ANSI 60 for use in plants for drinking water production.
